AMSE SUMMER SCHOOL 2023 ON POLITICAL ECONOMY: INSTITUTIONS AND MEDIA

The 2023 AMSE Summer School covers recent theories and empirical approaches that economists have designed to study the determinants and the implications of different institutions and political mechanisms, with a special attention on the role of media.

How the political system is organized, influenced, and even performed is an old question in Political Economy. The economic analysis of political systems and institutions is of paramount importance, as our world is becoming more complex, democracies are weakened by populists' rulers, and new issues such as climate change and cultural extremism arise. While most theoretical and empirical works treated institutions as exogenous so far, a recent literature in political economy aim to examine how the "rules of the game" interact with the evolution of political elites, the use of media, and culture.

During the three days of the Summer School, participants will get rigorous and in-depth exposure to the most recent theories and empirical methods in political economy, with a special focus on the role of institutions and media. Lectures will be given by leading experts in the field:

  • Maria PETROVA (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona Institute for Political Economy and Governance),
  • Patrick FRANCOIS (University of British Columbia, Vancouver School of Economics),
  • Marc SANGNIER (Aix-Marseille University, AMSE),
  • Avner SEROR (Aix-Marseille University, AMSE).

This year’s summer school should be of interest to graduate students or academics who want to expand their knowledge in this area of research and to practitioners who want to familiarize themselves with the key advances in models and the empirics of political economy. Participants will have the opportunity to present their research in workshop during the summer school. The summer school will take place in the city of Marseille and there is no possibility to attend the classes online.
